Do you ever wonder where you got your fearless nature or your ability to sing? Both heredity and environment shape who we are and how we act. Dating back to 13th century France, the terms nature and nurture has been used to describe personality trait development.
What is nature and nurture? Some scientists believe that people act a certain way due to genetic predisposition or "animal instinct". This is the "nature" theory of behavior. Other scientists believe that a person acts a certain way due to the fact that they were taught to act that way. This is the "nurture" theory of human behavior.

So, which school of thought is correct? They both are. It is clear that physical traits or characteristics are hereditary. Eye color, hair color, and even freckles are come from your parents. However, things like behavior, personality, and intelligence are a little unclear. These traits could be either hereditary or learned.
Therefore, many propose that it is no longer "nature vs. nurture", but "nature and nurture". Scientists have started looking at how both nature and nurture are intertwined in the way we grow and develop.
Others go on to propose that "nurture overcomes nature". They feel that whatever traits are genetic or predestined can be overcome by the way a person is raised. This way of thinking has come under scrutiny in recent years with the debate on homosexuality.
Whatever your original school of thought on the matter, it is difficult to discount the fact that a lot of our traits are indeed hereditary, while some cannot be fully explained.
