Creating Fun in the Workplace

Ask anyone, "Do you have enough FUN in your life?" The answer is most often NO! Then ask, "What do you want most in your life in relation to work?" Studies show that most people say they want a healthy work:life balance. The good news is an important ingredient in work:life balance is having FUN in the workplace. Fun increases creativity and productivity by as much as 15%... not to mention revitalizing the human spirit.

Here are the Top 10 simple and fun changes to make in the workplace to "spice up" your work environment:

1. New ideas for the dress code.

Might be a dress down day or a dress up day or maybe a crazy hat day. Use your imagination!

2. A company talent show.

There are many hidden talents in the workplace of which we are rarely aware. Bring these talents out in a lunch time or Friday afternoon show.

3. An art gallery.

Many employees and their children are incredibly talented in art, photography, writing, etc. Showcase this in a public place at work and celebrate the creativity and talent so that it is enjoyed rather than missed.

4. A karaoke lunch.

Too fun! This is an event that will be talked about for months to come. Guaranteed to create laughter... an energizing force!

5. Paint.

How many offices are lacking colour and feel lifeless? Make it a shared adventure to grab a can or two of paint and add some colour and some joy to your work environment.

6. Host an "energy" event.

Get everyone to do a little research and find one new way to increase energy in our lives. Share this information with each other over coffee or at the start of a meeting to create a pool of knowledge that will positively impact the workplace.

7. Sponsor a local charity event.

Find ways to incorporate adding FUN with helping others. Host a board game event with seniors or a playground event with children.

8. Create company rituals.

Find ways to celebrate success and honour hard work by incorporating company rituals like "high fives" or a "happy dance".

9. Toys!

We all have toys collected from different stress management seminars. Create a "toy box" that staff can access to have fun every day or to add humour to meetings and decrease intensity.

10. Walk.

Organize a coffee walk group to go for a quick 10 minute spin around the block at coffee times. Fresh air and exercise always lift the spirit.

It starts with YOU! Give yourself permission to have more FUN at work... then INSPIRE others to do the same. Remember, you CHOOSE to have fun in the workplace. You spend a great amount of your life there, why not choose to ENJOY it!
