Alcohol is one of the crucial things especially dealing with the driver. It is because at the roadside is installed a screening device which is able to detect the alcohol. If this device then delivers the positive result, you can have further test which is known as evidential test. It is mostly carried out at the police station.
What is screening device?
SEBASTIAN
Screening device has the design just like old-fashioned mobile phones. For the test, you only need to blow into a disposable mouthpiece. The whole process of this test is relatively short since it only takes a minute. There are four categories of the result that this device offers include "fail", "warn", "pass", and "zero". If you fail the test, it means that you need to take further test, evidential breath test at the police station.
Evidential breath testing
Evidential breath testing uses either infrared cell or fuel cell device. An infrared cell works to direct the infrared energy via the sample. Then, any unabsorbed energy will be detected. The infrared absorption occurs more in line with the high level of ethanol.
The process of the test is started through a sample of an ambient air. It is tested as the blank check. Then, it is checked for the air/ethanol standard of the sample used. The standard concentration of the alcohol in a sample is 35 μg/100 ml air. The samples of the breath are then tested and it is separated by the air sample. The test is ended by a final air and standard check.
If the result of the test from the screening device and evidential breath testing show 15% difference or more or 5 μg, it means that the device has made an error message. Therefore, you have to take further test which is known as laboratory analysis through your urine or blood. If the two results lie in the range of 40 μg up to 50 μg/100 ml breath, you have a right for blood sample. However, if the result shows larger than 50 μg/100 ml breath, you can be prosecuted.
