Leadership Trait Dependability

Dependability encompasses more than being at your job on time as it has a wide range of expectations.

How many times have you made the comment "If I only had someone I could depend on my job would be so much easier." We have all made that comment, "why can't I depend on anyone?" There are loads of people that are extremely dependable and it doesn't take long to realize who they are. The mistake that we often make is that we take them for granted forgetting to show our appreciation.

Dependability isn't just showing up on time it's also decision making, trust and total commitment to your position. Let's use an example; Joe is an excellent associate that has never been late for work over the past 2 years. He has worked hard to be the master of his trade but has made numerous bad decisions concerning his personal life. He has taken his anger out on other associates which has a major impact on their morale. We need Joe to be totally dependable and provide a positive image. If you have to wonder what personality is showing up today then the level of dependability is unacceptable.

Kalin has also been employed for 2 years and has been late on one occasion, associates were worried as it wasn't like her to be late, and when she arrived she immediately advised her boss she had been in an accident. She was physically ok and performed her duties admirably. She could have made the decision to be mad about the accident but she chose to be a consistently dependable leader regardless of the situation.

Dependability requires a personal commitment each and everyday and a lot of hard work on your behalf. It is well worth the effort as it is a great feeling to be recognized for your total dependability.
